Surname Origins Tried to do some research on the origins of some of our surnames. Here is what we have found so far.
Buda
1. Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, and Slovak: topographic name from Polish and Ukrainian buda, Czech bouda ‘hut’, ‘cabin’, ‘shack’, ‘stall’.
2. Polish and Ukrainian: from a short form of any of various compound personal names beginning with Budzi-.
3. Czech and Slovak: from a short form of the Czech personal name Budislav, composed of the elements budi- ‘to awaken or inspire’ + slav ‘glory’,
or of any other personal name formed with budi- as the first element.
